001 | An Unsolicited “Paradigm Shift” Message

Context of the Communication

Before this message was sent, the writer had expressly instructed Nicholas to stop contacting her by text following an inappropriate exchange involving the writer and other members of the C-suite. During that exchange, Nicholas questioned whether the writer could be trusted with significant funds and characterized her financial circumstances as desperate.

At the time, MSCG owed the writer in excess of $3 million for unpaid compensation, unreimbursed business expenses, financial contributions, and other outstanding obligations. The writer’s home was also entering foreclosure after she had continued working, funding company-related expenses, and relying upon repeated representations that payment was forthcoming.

Against that backdrop, questioning the writer’s trustworthiness because of financial circumstances substantially created by MSCG’s continued failure to meet its obligations was, at best, unreasonable and disconnected from the underlying facts. The relevant exchange and its broader context will be disclosed and documented later in this file.

Despite the writer’s prior instruction that Nicholas stop contacting her by text, Nicholas subsequently sent the following (and other) unsolicited message regarding a “paradigm shift.”

The Message

Nicholas sent the writer an explanation of a “paradigm shift,” followed by the statements, “Not nice” and “I wish we can talk record me.” The writer operates a company named ParadigmShifter, making the subject matter notable within the context of the parties’ prior communications.

The same explanation of a “paradigm shift” was also sent to another MSCG executive. However, the phrase “Not nice” was omitted from that version. The reason for the difference is unknown. The altered wording suggests that the additional comment may have been directed specifically toward the writer rather than forming part of a general message distributed to multiple executives.

The phrase “I wish we can talk record me” is reproduced exactly as written. Its intended meaning was unclear.

This message became the origin of the phrase “allergic to paradigm shifts,” which was subsequently used by the writer in reference to Nicholas’s apparent characterization of disagreement, scrutiny, or resistance to a particular conclusion as an unwillingness to accept change.

The Broader Context of a “Paradigm Shift”

The language Nicholas sent was not an original observation or theory. It was taken verbatim from a commonly generated description of a paradigm shift: a concept popularized by philosopher Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. The quoted passage focused narrowly on the point at which scientific activity and experimentation begin to contradict previously accepted premises and a new paradigm replaces the dominant framework.

However, the quotation omitted the broader context of what a genuine paradigm shift represents. Paradigm shifts are not inherently negative, nor do they occur merely because someone identifies conflicting information or disagrees with an established conclusion. They generally reflect the advancement of knowledge: new evidence is examined, existing assumptions are tested, previously unexplained findings are considered, and a stronger framework may emerge because it more effectively explains the available evidence.

Editorial Comment

Any experienced researcher understands that research can be shaped by the manner in which information is selected and presented. If a person searches long enough, isolates only favorable findings, excludes contradictory evidence, changes the relevant timeframe, or removes information from its broader context, a body of research can often be condensed or framed to appear to support a predetermined conclusion.

That does not mean the underlying research supports that conclusion when considered as a whole.

The identification of an anomaly, contradiction, or alternative interpretation does not, by itself, establish that accepted information is incorrect or that a genuine paradigm shift has occurred. Credible analysis requires transparent methodology, full context, consideration of evidence both supporting and challenging the proposed conclusion, and a willingness to revise one’s position when the complete body of evidence does not support it.

In this instance, the excerpt Nicholas selected emphasized contradiction and the replacement of established premises while omitting the more constructive meaning of scientific progress underlying the concept: paradigm shifts occur when a new framework provides a more complete, accurate, and useful explanation of the evidence—not simply because selected information can be presented in opposition to an existing understanding.
